Gideok Moon is a drummer and improviser from Seoul, South Korea, currently based in Bern, Switzerland.
He works with sound, improvisation, and the boundary between acoustic and electronic music. Gideok treats improvisation as a method, not a genre, for exploring relationships among sound, rhythm, space, and choice shaped by experience, while examining how individuals and communities connect.
You can find him as Life and Sound (with saxophonist Sang-beom Kim), i!i!o (an electronic-acoustic trio), or solo, continuously exploring how personal sound becomes shared language.
After studying swing drumming at Kyung Hee University, Gideok moved beyond institutional boundaries to develop his own musical language. He deepened his instrument approach with Junyoung Song and expanded artistically through close work with saxophonist Sunjae Lee. He entered Korea’s free improvisation scene via the experimental community around Mung Music. A 2022 workshop with cellist Okkyung Lee became a decisive turning point in his sound philosophy. He has released a solo drum improvisation album (Alla Prima, 2022) and a duo album (Mealworm, 2025), and has performed at festivals including the Jarasum Jazz Festival, the Korean Cultural Centre in Germany, and jazz clubs across Korea.
Gideok is currently pursuing his Master's degree in Jazz and Contemporary Music at the Hochschule der Künste Bern (HKB) in Switzerland.
